To all the new students to the University of New Haven, welcome! And all those returning, welcome back!
We here at University Dining listened to your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions, and together with the University crafted a plan to renovate The Marketplace to better serve the campus community.
In addition to the physical changes, which we will go into detail a bit later on, there have been changes to our program as well.
We are now open from 7 am to 8 pm, Monday through Friday, and 10:30 am to 8 pm on the weekends. This gives you the freedom to enjoy a good meal, snack, or bite at your own convenience. No longer are there times where classes or activities let out just in time to miss a meal period. Come when you are free!
The other significant change is that lunch is no longer a la carte. Now all you need is a swipe!
Now on to the physical changes…I am Dining Dan, and I’m excited to take you on a tour of the all-new Marketplace!
Once you enter Bartels Hall, and make your way past Jazzman’s, you will start to see a large sign dominating the space down the stairs. This is your entry point to the new and improved Marketplace, your premier dining location on campus!
Once you descend down the stairs, you’ll read the words “The Marketplace” adorned on the sign, and you know you are in the right place. To your left and right, cashiers are ready to greet you with a smile and get you inside. Also, you can order for here or to go, receiving a to-go container, utensils, and cup if you need to take your meal on the run.
Now, as we pass the cashiers, the real fun begins! All around you are various stations, all offering different options to satisfy anyone’s hunger.
If you entered on the right side, you’ll see our Chef’s Choice station on your left. Here you can get a delicious meal sautéed before your eyes. Whether it’s omelets in the morning (a very popular choice!), or rice bowls with shrimp and veggies, Chef’s Choice is guaranteed to give you a gourmet meal!
To the right of Chef’s Choice, we have the relocated and always popular Tex-Mex station. Opening at 11 am, this is your spot for burritos, quesadillas, crunchy chips, and other Mexican cuisine!
Now, let’s head inside, underneath the stairs, where more variety awaits!
First, we have the Simple Serving station. Here is where those of us with dietary restrictions can find a good hot meal that they can enjoy. Also by this station is the improved MyZone area, with gluten free items and a reserved microwave to help feed those with gluten difficulties!
To the right of Simple Serving is our Hometown station. Every day, every meal, a changing menu brings you something different and delicious!
Next, our Vegan/Vegetarian station. We always strive to provide a good hot meal for everyone, and that includes those that don’t partake in meat. Here, check out our variety of delicious meatless options!
As we continue our trip around the stations, next up is the Beach Grill. Find your burgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese, and other crispy goodness!
On the end we have the Pizza/Pasta station. Extended from the old station, what is now here is more of a destination area. Get a slice of pizza, some pasta, and salad, all in one place!
Before we head back out into the seating area, let’s take a quick peek at the center of the area. Moved from the alcove, here we have our Salad Bar. Build your own nutritious and delicious salad with our many options, and grab a bowl of soup to accompany it!
Now we venture back into the main dining area, where we will find two more stations, the Creamery and the Deli. It’s breakfast all day at the Grainery – snag some cereal, bagels, yogurt, or oatmeal at any time of the day. The Deli is still the always dependable spot to get yourself a great sandwich!
In addition to the new stations, you can find drinks (with four different flavor shot options) along both sides of the stairs, and dessert/ice cream located to the right of the Pizza/Pasta station.
And that concludes our little “tour”! Hopefully this provides some clarity and information…change is great but can be confusing! If you have any questions about the new Marketplace, or would like to add some feedback or ideas, you can always contact us via e-mail or social media. We’d love to hear from you!
